Educational Labs

We have found that the traditional concept of the classroom does not make best use of the teaching environment. Learners sitting behind desks in a cramped and impersonal space is not at all conducive to the interactive relationship that needs to be nurtured between learners and teachers. The teacher standing at the head of the class is distanced and impersonal, and cannot pay individual attention to learners as a result. What makes the Edu-Lab Home School Support Center unique is that we have developed laboratories as opposed to classrooms.

Each laboratory focuses on a specific area of education, and is fitted out and decorated accordingly. The aim is to distinguish these different learning areas by creating specially-themed environments that are fun, flexible, and creative. They evoke interest and curiosity in our learners, which is a key requirement to absorbing knowledge.

Not only are we able to incorporate many different learning spaces in our range of laboratories, but learners are able to move seamlessly between them. This ensures that they remain engaged and stimulated at all times. The range of activities on offer, and the attention we have paid to the smallest details, means that no learner can be bored or disinterested at any time.

The attention we have paid to the smallest details, means that
no learner can be bored or disinterested at any time!

An example of how we incorporate the latest trends and developments in education is our adoption of the concept of ‘flexible seating’ in our range of laboratories. For example, the Reading Lab features comfortable bean bags to allow learners to relax properly, and thereby turn reading into a pleasurable and relaxing activity. Or they can simply lie on the floor if they so wish. The choice is theirs to make, and helps in encouraging individual expression and preferences, which in turn results in balanced and confident learners.

Our Computer Lab allows for learners to learn how to navigate our technological world by acquiring important skills. It also affords learners the opportunity to create learning content by practicing on computer applications. The lab engages our learners on all mathematics levels by making use of our teaching aids, and concrete and abstract forms of learning.

Our Earth Lab covers lessons pertaining to the subjects of geography and history, and all aspects related to our planet and beyond. Learners are surrounded by images of our solar system, and maps of all of our countries and continents, as well as amazing images of our sea life, while having the choice to work either on the carpet with a lap table.

Our little chefs are given the opportunity to acquire some culinary skills in our Cooking Lab, where they are enthralled by learning new techniques in creating delicious savoury and sweet dishes.

Our Exploration Lab covers lessons involving our investigations into the subjects of biology and science. Our learners are immersed in a world of investigation and exploration, and are seated at a rectangular table with stools, so that they may feel as if they are in a real-life laboratory.

Our Reading Lab affords our learners the opportunity to immerse themselves in a forest of adventure and imagination, as they can pick up a book and relax on our comfy bean bags, and be transported into a literary world within our wonderful array of books.

Our Art Lab affords our learners the opportunity to explore their creativity, in that they are surrounded by their own artworks, and inspired by the vast array of artistic equipment and materials at their disposal, so that they may express themselves freely and unequivocally. Art lessons can also be conducted outside our lab.

Our Homework and Technology Lab accommodates all of our large projects and group activities such as building, knitting, and crafting, in addition to afternoon homework sessions. The lab includes four large round tables with a plethora of flexible seating options: crates, yoga balls, chairs, and stools.

Our Language Lab entices our learners to engage in our lessons in the Afrikaans and English languages. They are surrounded by inspirational words, pictures, and colours.

Learners are given the opportunity to learn how to plant their own fruits and vegetables in our very own veggie patch! Learners are taught basic gardening skills and the planting of trees and flowers.

Our Outdoors lab allows learners to make use of the jungle gyms, netball post, and soccer goals. The vast amount of outdoor space allows them to build obstacle courses and devise physical games of all sorts, with an abundance of outdoor equipment to choose from.

Some benefits of flexible seating include:

  • Blood flow and Oxygen flow to the brain
  • Better posture and core strength
  • Focus and creativity
  • Communication and Collaboration
  • Concentration and engagement
  • Increased brain-based activities
  • Knowledge acquisition and higher level reasoning
  • Information retention and long term memory
  • Students learn best when they have some control over their environment. Flexible seating gives students the choice of where they work and with whom, which in turn allows them to change their location and position as needed.
  • Traditional desks can make students territorial or possessive over their space and supplies. Flexible seating encourages children to share space and supplies.
  • Students learn better when they have a chance to work together. Flexible seating allows students to easily pair up, in small groups, or discuss as a whole class.
  • Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sense of touch. This type of stimulation can help children focus and process information. Sensory input is especially helpful for students with ADHD, ADD and ASD.

Our tutoring for home-schooled learners assists them with curriculum content, allowing them to apply what they are learning in creative and meaningful ways. In the afternoons, we provide an extra-lesson service, which entails tutoring per hour, as well as homework supervision from Monday to Thursday from 14:00 to 17:00.

Instead of classrooms, we use labs.
